Jeremy is going through his revolution right now
Jessica just wanted to make sure that he made it to the couch
Last night didn’t seem all that bad
But the up-ended ashtray next to the end table tells a much different tale
Jeremy had lost his job the week prior
And this was the third one in as many weeks
The pattern for them is too familiar and way too familial
Jeremy Senior left a wake of black eyes, DUIs, and an empty bottle of whatever he had in his hand a few minutes before.

It has been way too many times that Jeremy promised change
Only to flail away at the abyss of his own emptiness
And then turn around, face Jessica
Blame Jessica for every bit of it
And tell her that she just doesn’t understand what he’s going through
And tell her that she just doesn’t understand what it’s like to provide nothing to no one
She’s the only spectator and participant that gets to clean it all up at the end of the every night
At the end of every night

Jessica graduated first in their class and had a full ride to Princeton
Jeremy was the proverbial high school football team captain that you’d expect in this type of story
The knee was blownout during the homecoming game, and their prom pictures featured
An obviously intoxicated Jeremy on crutches
Jessica already feeling the weight of this adult-sized child and the anchor around her future that he would come to represent
This was such a sad Checkov’s gun to fail to recognize

It has been way too many times that Jeremy promised change
Only to flail away at the abyss of his own emptiness
And then turn around, face Jessica
Blame Jessica for every bit of it
And tell her that she just doesn’t understand what he’s going through
And tell her that she just doesn’t understand what it’s like to provide nothing to no one
She’s the only spectator and participant that gets to clean it all up at the end of the every night

Jeremy accused Jessica of gaslighting him when she pried about him getting any sort of help
She wondered which one of his alcoholic friends had taught him what the word gaslighting meant
But doubted any of them really understood the word or what was actually happening
In their home
When she confronted his family about the issues, they all stood their slack-jawed and couldn’t believe that their little Jeremy could ever do anything like this
She told them all, Just because I carry it so well, doesn’t mean it ain’t heavy

It has been way too many times that Jeremy promised change
Only to flail away at the abyss of his own emptiness
And then turn around, face Jessica
Blame Jessica for every bit of it
And tell her that she just doesn’t understand what he’s going through
And tell her that she just doesn’t understand what it’s like to provide nothing to no one
She’s the only spectator and participant that gets to clean it all up at the end of the every night
At the end of every night

Jessica was now past a mystery that she absolutely refused to discuss
And they were officially traveling to completely different places both literally and figuratively
Jeremy screamed at her you’re the problem and you’re not the universe
All I want to do is be a good person. I don’t understand why you won’t tell me how to be a good person
I just want to know how to be a good person
And that’s when Jessica completely emptied the gun into his chest

She is the prettiest girl
In this ugly town

You came home bearing fruits of your own confusion
And you don’t know how she coped with all the contusions
Life keeps running you over now
Life keeps happening to you somehow
His eulogy was whispered as she pushed him into the quarry

Everyone knows the unfortunate rake’s conclusion
Her whole world blown open with her solution
Jeremy sinking to the bottom now
Jessica leaving this town somehow
Fell asleep on grandma’s couch watching Endless Story
